At age 17, Charlie McGowan was convicted of capital murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault for his involvement in an armed robbery that resulted in a murder. Although he didn’t shoot anyone, he was sentenced to life without parole and faced spending his entire life in a Mississippi prison. But with the help of two Supreme Court decisions and five years of pro bono service from Bradley Partner Michael J. Bentley, Charlie now has a chance at parole after almost 25 years in prison.

After Bradley attorney Lindsey Boney argued that death-row inmate Clemente Javier Aguirre-Jarquin deserved a new trial, the Florida Supreme Court unanimously reversed Aguirre’s convictions and ordered the new trial. Aguirre had been on death row since 2006 for the double stabbing murders of two women in 2004. Bradley attorneys pointed to compelling new evidence to vacate Aguirre’s conviction and death sentence.

Bradley attorney Scott Adams served a one-year commitment as a Legal Fellow (a volunteer attorney) with International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency that seeks to rescue people victimized by horrendous abuses such as slavery, sexual exploitation, property grabbing and other forms of violent oppression. IJM’s Uganda office primarily deals with property grabbing cases, working to restore land that has been wrongfully taken from widows and orphans, usually through violence or threats of violence.
