Stephanie Scruggs obtains, maintains, defends, and enforces the IP rights of both U.S. and foreign-based clients in a wide range of industries, including the chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, electrical, financial services, and mechanical fields. Her practice includes procuring, managing, and protecting worldwide IP portfolios. Stephanie has written and successfully prosecuted patents relating to dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery devices and materials, medical devices, leisure and sporting goods, optical imaging devices and systems, and more. She also advises on and assists with licensing and acquiring IP.
Stephanie’s litigation experience allows her to assess risk from third-party IP and develop creative strategies for mitigating those risks, including through infringement, validity, enforceability analyses and post-grant proceedings. Her patent and trademark prosecution background allows her to assist clients with harvesting and growing IP portfolios. Stephanie’s licensing experience further allows her to assist clients in a variety of IP and technology transactions, software agreements, and other service agreements. She leverages her experience and knowledge to counsel clients on strategies that not only solve acute needs, but also protect and advance her clients’ overall business goals. Clients appreciate her pre-law research and engineering experience and uncanny ability to capture the key aspects of innovations and distilling them into understandable and protectable concepts.
Stephanie started her career working as a chemical engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. She then enjoyed working with petrochemical and commodity chemical companies as a consultant for several years before making the leap to join IP boutique firm Pennie & Edmonds LLP, where she worked as a patent agent while attending law school at night.
